Live roulette online: how a real wheel works on your screen

A real croupier, a real ball and a wheel you can watch spin. Live roulette is the easiest live game to learn and the one where table choice makes the biggest difference to what an evening costs.

What happens during a spin

A live roulette table is a real wheel in a studio, filmed by several cameras. When the betting window opens, a countdown runs on screen and you place chips on the virtual layout. The croupier spins the wheel and launches the ball; shortly after, “no more bets” closes the window. The number is read off the wheel and every bet is settled automatically, usually with a close-up of the pocket so you can see it for yourself. Then the window opens again.

The rhythm matters more than people think. A dealer-run table usually spins somewhere between every thirty seconds and once a minute. At a steady stake, a table that spins twice as often costs twice as much an hour, because every spin carries the house edge.

The three wheels

European: single zero

37 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36 plus one green zero. This is the standard wheel in most live lobbies and the one to look for.

American: double zero

38 pockets, with a second green pocket marked 00. A straight-up number still pays 35 to 1, exactly as on the European wheel, so the extra pocket is pure cost to the player. If a table name doesn’t say which wheel it uses, look at the layout: a 00 box gives it away.

French: single zero, with a refund rule

The same 37-pocket wheel as European roulette, plus la partage on even-money bets. If the ball lands on zero, you get half your red/black, odd/even or high/low stake back. For players who stick to those bets, a French table is the cheapest wheel on the floor.

Auto, speed and multiplier tables

Bets, from simple to call bets

Outside bets cover big groups of numbers: red or black, odd or even, 1–18 or 19–36 pay 1 to 1; dozens and columns pay 2 to 1. Inside bets cover a few numbers: a split (two numbers) pays 17 to 1, a street (three) 11 to 1, a corner (four) 8 to 1, a six-line 5 to 1 and a single number 35 to 1. On every one of them, zero is the pocket that beats you.

Most live tables also show a racetrack, an oval copy of the wheel used for call bets. They cover sections of the wheel rather than the table: voisins du zéro (the 17 numbers around zero), tiers du cylindre (the 12 opposite), orphelins (the 8 left over) and neighbour bets, a number plus a few either side. They look clever and cost exactly the same per chip as any other bet; they’re simply a faster way to place many chips at once.

Choosing a table

  1. Wheel first. Single zero, and French if you play even-money bets.
  2. Minimum second. Find tables at your stake before you look at anything else.
  3. Pace third. Watch one spin; a slower table gives your budget more time.
  4. Stream last. Check it runs smoothly on your connection, especially on mobile data.

A bigger live floor makes this easier. When we counted on 7 September 2026, Cas2Bet had 516 live tables; the other four casinos we review had 210 each. More tables means more wheels at more stake levels at the same moment.

Roulette and a welcome bonus

Live roulette and welcome matches don’t mix well. Live games usually count for very little towards wagering, sometimes nothing, and many terms also restrict betting both red and black at once. If roulette is your game, the cleanest option is often to deposit without a code and keep a cash balance you can withdraw at any time. The arithmetic of a match is on best casino bonuses, and the wider live lobby is covered in the live dealer guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between European and American roulette?

A European wheel has 37 pockets with a single zero; an American wheel has 38, with an extra double zero. A straight-up number pays 35 to 1 on both, so the extra pocket makes the American wheel the more expensive one to play.

What is la partage in French roulette?

A rule on even-money bets: if the ball lands on zero, you get half of your red/black, odd/even or high/low stake back instead of losing all of it.

Is live roulette rigged?

A live table uses a physical wheel and ball, filmed in real time, with the result read off the wheel itself. You can watch every spin before you bet.

How fast is live roulette?

A dealer-run table usually spins somewhere between every thirty seconds and once a minute; automatic wheels with no dealer are quicker. Faster tables cost more per hour at the same stake.

Does live roulette count towards a casino bonus?

Often very little or not at all. Check the game weighting in the bonus terms before using live roulette to clear wagering.
