Mines: a settings cheat sheet for choosing your number of mines
The mine count is the one decision that shapes every Mines round. This page turns it into numbers you can use, so you choose on purpose rather than on a hunch.
Mines puts 25 tiles in front of you and hides a number of mines among them. You choose how many. Every gem you uncover lifts the payout; uncover a mine and it’s over. Bank whenever you like after a gem. Versions exist from Spribe and other studios, and they all share this idea.
So everything depends on one setting. Here it is in numbers.
The one rule to remember
The mine count sets the odds of every tile you open.
The payout per tile is priced from those odds, minus a small house edge.
So more mines doesn’t mean better value. It means bigger swings.
Odds of the first tile being safe
| Mines hidden | Safe tiles | Chance the first tile is safe |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 24 | 96% |
| 3 | 22 | 88% |
| 5 | 20 | 80% |
| 10 | 15 | 60% |
| 15 | 10 | 40% |
| 20 | 5 | 20% |
Odds of getting three safe tiles in a row
This is the number most players never look at, and it’s the most useful one.
| Mines hidden | Three safe tiles in a row |
|---|---|
| 1 | 88% |
| 3 | 66.96% |
| 5 | 49.6% |
| 10 | 19.8% |
| 15 | 5.2% |
With 5 mines, three safe tiles is a coin toss. With 10 mines, you’ll manage it about one round in five. With 15, about one round in twenty.
Cheat sheet: pick a setting by goal
| Goal | Suggested set-up |
|---|---|
| Long session, frequent small wins | 1 to 3 mines, cash out after 2 to 4 tiles |
| Balanced | 5 mines, cash out after 2 or 3 tiles |
| Occasional big multiplier | 10 mines, cash out after 1 or 2 tiles |
| Pure lottery | 15+ mines, one tile |
Whichever row you pick, the long-run price hardly moves. The Spribe edition is listed at 97%, and every other studio prints its own figure inside the game.
Why patterns don’t work
Each round the server scatters the mines afresh. A corner tile is no safer than one in the middle. The last round’s layout says nothing about this one. And no app can see where the mines are before you tap, because the layout lives on the game server.
Reading the payout ladder
Before you tap, most versions show the multiplier you’d collect after each safe tile. Read that ladder once for your chosen mine count. With 1 mine the steps are tiny, because each tile is almost certainly safe. With 10 mines the very first step already looks generous, because 40% of the time it ends your round. The ladder is simply the odds table above, turned into prices. If a step looks “too good”, look at the odds behind it.
A session plan that fits a fast game
- Budget 20, stake 0.20: 100 rounds of stakes.
- At 97%, 100 rounds cost about 0.60 on average.
- A round can take two seconds. Set a round limit (say 100) and a time limit.
Same stake every round. Bumping it up after hitting a mine is the classic way a cheap night gets pricey.

One experiment worth doing
In demo mode, play 50 rounds with 3 mines, cashing out after three gems every time. Count your wins. You should land somewhere around two rounds in three. Then play 50 rounds with 10 mines, cashing out after one gem. You’ll win about six in ten, but each win is far bigger, and the losses cluster. Same game, same return, two completely different evenings.
Common mistakes
- Picking a mine count to “recover”. More mines means faster losses as often as bigger wins.
- Changing your plan mid-round. Decide your cash-out tile before the first tap.
- Using bonus money. Many offers count instant games at a low rate or exclude them.

Frequently asked questions
What’s a sensible number of mines for a beginner?
One to three. You’ll uncover several gems most rounds and learn the rhythm without losing the balance quickly.
With five mines, how often do three gems in a row come up?

What return does the game pay?
The Spribe edition is listed at 97%; other editions print their own figure in the info panel.
Is there a safest tile to start with?
No. The layout is shuffled every round, so each covered tile carries the same risk.
